Knowing the difference between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt will probably convince you to join the Greek yogurt bandwagon.
Yogurt has been quite popular lately because of all this hype on integrating “probiotics” in your regular diet to promote healthier digestion and increasing the body’s defenses. Hence you have the famed yogurt, which has the live cultures that you need all the promised protein and calcium, partnered with fruits, for more vitamins. It’s a match made in heaven and a perfect healthy snack. But yes, there’s actually a better snack than that: Greek yogurt with fruits.
Why is that? Let’s start with what started this yogurt hype in the first place: probiotics. We fell in love with our regular yogurt because it has live cultures but while it has around two strains of probiotics in it, Greek yogurt usually contain five to six!
Greek yogurt also has less carbohydrate than your regular yogurt. This is great for your diet and especially excellent for diabetics. While a regular yogurt contain around 9 grams of carbohydrate, with the same amount of yogurt, Greek yogurt only contains 15 to 17 grams.
Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt. Most brands that you find in the supermarket have almost twice the protein than the regular yogurt. This makes Greek yogurt a great snack for athletes too. On top of that, it contains less sodium, around half, of the usual yogurt.
As for taste and creaminess, Greek yogurt definitely wins over regular yogurt. The thicker texture is more appealing. This because of the way Greek yogurt is made. While regular yogurt is only strained two times to remove the whey (water), Greek yogurt is strained three times. Removing more water from your yogurt in making them creates a thicker and more substantial yogurt product.
And because yogurt still has a few calories in it, the nonfat variant has also risen into popularity. But nonfat plain yogurt tends to be watery, artificially thickened and tastes bland. It’s not a very pleasant meal. You may use it for cooking if you really want to but unfortunately, it curdles easily. Here’s when a nonfat Greek yogurt steals the limelight again. Greek yogurt is just great for creams and dips. And because it is already thick, you don’t have to add any artificial thickener, making it all the healthier.
Unfortunately, Greek yogurt has its downside. It is a bit more expensive than your regular yogurt, probably because of the richness of its ingredients. It also contains less calcium than your regular yogurt. This is because some of the calcium is drained of during the triple straining process.
Although Greek yogurt outshines your regular yogurt in some aspects, you might still want to consider its disadvantages too in choosing the right yogurt for you.
